“Malaysia Opens Bids for 2,000MW Large-Scale Solar Projects Under LSS@PETRA+ Program

The Malaysian Ministry of Energy Transition and Water Transformation (PETRA) announced a major initiative to boost renewable energy development through the LSS@PETRA+ program. Starting January 20, 2025, bids will be opened for an additional 2,000MWac quota for large-scale solar power plant projects. This aligns with the country’s energy transition goals to expand green electricity supply and achieve a 70% renewable energy capacity mix in the national grid by 2050.

The program offers two packages:

  • Package A: For ground-mounted solar plants with capacities ranging from 30MWac to 500MWac, with a total quota of 1,500MWac.
  • Package B: For floating or water-surface solar plants with capacities between 10MWac and 500MWac, with a total quota of 500MWac.

Successful proposals are expected to result in solar plants beginning operations by 2027. This initiative is projected to generate RM8 billion in investments and create approximately 12,000 jobs, providing a significant boost to the green energy industry. PETRA emphasizes that this effort not only enhances Malaysia’s renewable energy capacity but also supports the government’s commitment to reducing the carbon footprint of the power sector.
